FEED THE GORILLA

The Wall exhibition space was set up for me before Christmas and I had something in mind but it was clearly out of my ordinary - but something a gallery owner (formerly the Cube) suggested to me months ago. I had envisioned a larger than life pixel gorilla in 3D and thats all I had in my mind at the time. I didn't know how I was going to build it, and didn't know how it was going to end up and I was clearly concerned about prims. It isn't abstract but it isn't realistic and since pixel art is based on a cube, it seemed like it would be something I was capable of attempting without learning new skills. I got a late start because I got sick around the holidays but managed to work on it over several nights in a row. I don't have a studio for something this big so I used a sandbox. I was self concious about working in the open but because there were other artists there I chatted up a few and Asmita Duranjaya suggested the "Prim Generator" which I went out and purchased immediately. Like everything new, it starts with stops and stalls and suddenly at the very end...after many long hours and thoughts along the dog trail in the morning...it finally gets there. It was worth the pain, the struggle, the embarassment, the risk of humiliating myself, the fear of failure, and the time I could have been watching a football game. The gorilla is colorful, not the pink and white that it started out. The gorilla is painting the walls with his own image - which turns out to be all about me. Ha!!
The rules were: 1) pixel based, no exceptions, 2) no more than 300 prims, and 3) scale should be based on the SL cube (ok, so I verred off a bit).

Suspicious Mountain Revisited

In June I unveiled what I thought might be my last Primagery series called Suspicious Mountain. Then I was asked to exhibit more of my work at a couple of other galleries. I had already compiled a retrospective at the Mexico gallery so what was I going to do that was new and interesting? I went through my inventory of pictures and decided to resurrect the Suspicious Mountain prim sculptures and see what else I could find. I put them all together, retextured them, spun them upside down and all around and took about 30 shots - not necessarily of suspicious looking mountains. Out of all those shots, there was one that stood out - and it had that suspicious looking mountain in it. It will be auctioned off at the Artisan Castle on Friday as a one-of-a-kind. I think its beautiful. Here is a reproduction.

Many of my textures were created by Jewel MacMoragh when we were partnered and before she left SL. The irridescent texture you see in the landscape above makes this piece a winner.

The September Round - UWA

So...I'll miss the UWA challenges each month. :( There is one more but I don't have anything to submit/ Two of my works are in contention for the Grand Finale: "Spatial" and "Here Comes the Sun" On this Sunday, "Primscape Dream" has won something, an honorable mention perhaps, I don't know. UPDATE: Primscape Dream won 2 prizes!!! I'm truly proud of my work. Its original to Second Life and cannot be duplicated in RL. Theres a nice blog about it...although it is misnamed. Chronocules...?

Hope Mountain

A cube punctured by 5,000 long windows emit light. The project is made from anodized aluminum and the windows are tubes glazed with a transparent orange acrylic. Inside the central cube one light source illuminates all the windows and a few of the tubes provide seating.

Suspicious Mountain

Ok...kinda blurry. Monroe Snook made this poster for the revealing of my new primagery series, which is possibly my last. All the info I put on my notecard is on the poster.

The show is at the new Warehouse at Studio 33.

This series is different than any I have done before. I made a prim grouping and took photos but didn't like them...so I put on a ripple sculpty..and took some more pictures. They looked like mountain landscapes.

Bauhaus Revisted

A show I can really relate to...:) My friend Soundsmith Kamachi is curator at the Vista Hermosa Art Center and put together an exhibit that suits me just fine. I'm all about revisiting --- not reinventing.

The concept: The idea is that the artwork shows how Bauhaus has influenced your art or, alternatively, how you would interpret Bauhaus concepts in today's context. "Bauhaus" of course comprises all phases - from foundation in Weimar, over consolidation phase to its disintegration in Berlin. Influences, e.g. Expressionism or De Stijl.

The opening of "Bauhaus Revisited" is preliminarily scheduled for June 4 (a Saturday) at 2 PM SLT. Opening event:At the opening there will be a dance performance of Oskar Schlemmer's "Dance of the Sticks" by Janjii Rugani with music by Soundsmith Kamachi. As usual, there will be a live concert during the opening, plus champagne and dance balls.

"In one of our last conversations Sabrinaa said to me "I want to go kayaking" Its something she enjoyed very much and she kayaked in the river that flowed right past her house I imagine her gliding across its surface creating gentle ripples across its surface When we move through the world be it virtual or physical we create ripples, and, sometimes those ripples touch others. Sabrinaa created many ripples, gentle ones. This piece for Sabrinna is in two parts The first is a representation of her river go on, walk through it .. make your own ripples The second part is a flower, as many of you know she loved to make her flowers..... this one is for Sabrinaa. you can reach by touching the smaller flower at the base of its stem. Please turn off streaming music and media. Once there you can hear her river, the one that flows right next to her house. The notes and colours of the balls you see are chosen by the height and the surface temperature of her river. They will phase in and out with each other like an unstructured Steve Riech, there is no set tempo each one moving to the vaugarities imposed by the sim, bobbing like leaves on water, As her river slowly rises and lowers the texture is shifted so it changes the colour of the flower head that surrounds you. you may want to up your draw distance and pan from the outside. Sunset is a good setting. This is her river in real time more or less ..

Art Inspired by Music Inspired by the Sciences

Misprint Thursday invited me to participate in an exhibition called Visualizing Theorem. The show is being hosted by UTSA Adminstrative Island. I chose 002 "Error Code" because I liked the quick-paced rhythms, the electronic stacato, drum beat and the soft but off chord melody. It was pervasive, like the rhythm of rain and light patterns. As usual, I had to go through several iterations and failures to finally discover what I could do to best express the music. My work hasn't much to do with math and science or an error code. Its all about what the music inspired.

Art Breaker II - Album Cover Theme

Pendulum's album cover looked like something I could make for the album cover theme for Art Breaker at the Pop Art Lab this year. There are only a few more weeks left before it opens and there is much to do. I've enlisted the great minds and talents of two collaborators - Desdemona Enfield and Jewel MacMoragh to help me make this a fun and lively interpretation. Desdemona is well known for her scripting and builds quite well too. Jewel has helped me several times with her clever textures and inspiration.

This House Full of Shadows is dedicated to her and our memories together and to everyone that has enjoyed time with another and loved another. On the wall is an excerpt from a song..."In this House full of shadows, while the rain keeps pouring down my window too, when will the pain recede to the darkness, from whence it is come and I'm feeling so blue". Van Morrison wrote these words in "Reminds Me of You".

E-Motion in Berlin

This is a picture of my entry into the E-Motion contest - "Prism Angst" This scripted sculpture received 121 jury votes - with the top jury votes at 125 - :) But the real winners got the public votes too...and they all cool! Here were the rules:

1. The artwork has to be new and created exclusively for this specific contest.2. The topic is "eMotion" This has two meanings, "electronic motion" and "emotion" in the sense of "moving the mind"3. Something has to "move" in the artwork, either animations, particles or through scripts. Flat pictures without movement are not accepted.4. You can use up to 25 prims.5. One piece per participant!6. Welcome to the City! This picture of our build was taken by Honour McMillan for her blog http://honour-mcmillan.blogspot.com/ Jewel and I had fun again on the Playa. It runs from October 16-24. Soundy did it again and provided some great sounds that add to the work. Jewel's textures of the city were awesome and take a look at the sillouettes in some of the windows! :) Great fun! THE DIORAMA OF SECOND LIFE

After a few weeks of working on the small plot for BURN2 I acquired, I've come to realize that the work would be well represented on a tilted plane like a diorama, with a background of distant objects, a false perspective, with objects in the front much larger than those farther away. This is done to reinforce the illusion through depth perception of viewing a larger space— in this case a city based loosely on New York City. The background will be on a curved surface so that the viewer is not distracted by corners, seams, or edges. All of these techniques are means of presenting a realistic view of a large scene in a compact space-- an attempt at binocular perception of depth.

I enjoyed an interesting bit of history researching the typical diorama --the Daguerre Dioramas from Paris in the early 1800s. The Daguerre Diorama was a theatrical experience viewed by an audience in a highly specialized theatre in which large landscape paintings were viewed. The audience rotated on a massive turntable to see several scenes. These Daguerre Dioramas often had two paintings, but in some cases there were three. They consisted of semi-transparent linens that overlapped in a deep tunnel to create the depth the artist wanted to convey through manipulation of natural light, making the scene change like a live-action movie. The inventor and proprietor of the Diorama was Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851). He later co-invented the daguerreotype , the first widely used method of photography. Some "typical diorama effects included moonlit nights, winter snow turning into a summer meadow, rainbows after a storm, illuminated fountains," waterfalls, thunder and lightning, and ringing bells.

I'm reminded of Alizarin Goldflake's immersive containers and some other immersive artworks of SL. The landscapes in the SL sims are like dioramas that our avatars roam through, representing something we know in real life.

I also missed the deadline for the lottery. :( The plot is 1024 m and 351 prim limit. The plots are close together, unlike last year. My plot backs to the sim edge and is facing a roadway so that it doesn't necessarily have to be viewed from every angle. Some more famous SL artists were given larger plots in which to work with over 2100 prims available to them. The rest of us are crowded in the ghetto surrounding the main buildings. josef albers

At the age of 63, Josef Albers began what was to become his signature series, the 'Homage to the Square'. De Stijl

The term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. De Stijl is also the name of a journal that was published by the Dutch painter, designer, writer, and critic Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931), propagating the group's theories. Next to van Doesburg, the group's principal members were the painters Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), Vilmos Huszár (1884–1960), and Bart van der Leck (1876–1958), and the architects Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964), Robert van 't Hoff (1887–1979), and J.J.P. Oud (1890–1963). The artistic philosophy that formed a basis for the group's work is known as neoplasticism — the new plastic art (or Nieuwe Beelding in Dutch).

Mondrian himself sets forth these delimitations in his essay 'Neo-Plasticism in Pictorial Art'. He writes, "... this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary colour."

---------- A transition------------

This is the influence that provides more satisfaction than any other influences in art for me....although in my work, colors are more expansive and the patterns have more variety. I keep coming back to this movement as a reference because it brings harmony and peacefulness. I'm rejecting any further struggle with organic forms. Unless I experience another evolution or backward glance, I feel the style I am most comfortable with is strictly geometric. It has taken two years of experimentation in SL to finally find a resting place. I am there. I see the potential to keep me occupied with unlimited experiences within this realm of expression.

Georgia O'Keefe

Soon I plan to unveil some distinctively O'Keefe style primagery. Her ability to see the abstract in nature by zooming in, closely parallels my relationship with the prim. Because I don't use sculpties (some day, maybe), I don't have the freedom of shaping the forms relative to my "canvas" but it is remarkable, just how much it still feels like it is working. In this series, I've challenged myself to utilizing one shape only - a version of a two-fold calabi-yau or my favorite twisted torus. The element of light will personalize it for me...setting up the photos..making them "feel" like a canvas. InWorldz or Second Life

Lots of buzz going around and some artists leaving SL for a less expensive alternative. But, I visited InWorldz and there wasn't much there. So..yeah...its cheaper. Search didn't work so, frankly, I wouldn't have any idea what is there to explore. I love my SL home, my friends, and my experiences have been rich and rewarding - Don't want to give that up. Second Life 7 Year Birthday Bash

Jewel and I feel very lucky to be able to participate in this year's SL birthday with a build that illustrates collaboration, rather than our individual creations. It was a quick build, given the time allotted of approximately 10 days and we started with nothing but an idea - a Confetti Cannon. Once we had the idea and got the go-ahead to build on the land; I had to learn some scripting for just the right effect. Clouds at PiRats

The first photo is of Cloud 99, a non-scripted entry in the June UWA 3D Competition. It turned out to be failed attempt to create a sculpture for a primagery series that had the appearance of alot of white paint, similar to Susan Rothenberg's works. The pictures were only half as good as the sculpture.

The second one is a photo taken from inside my latest scripted sculpture in the Cloud series and is the background for the poster for the Opening event. The alpha texture from Jewel. A confetti-like effect suitable for the SL7B parcel exhibit coming soon called Confetti Cannon, this sculpture is called Cloud 49, made from 49 active prims. Also, like paint splatters of Pollack but digital and dimensional - the photos are equally as successful as the 3D work.

Exploring cubism and the guitar in the 21st ca using digital means via Second Life is my next journey. I have sounds to add to the sculptures which I think will prove to be an interesting evolution of the subject matter. Paintings experienced in 3D has driven me to this end. I hope it is fruitful. It sometimes is painful to break from the usual patterns. I'm anxious to put this idea to work soon in a series of primagery. This mode of collage lends itself well to the "prim painting" method of presentation but that really is still only 2D and scripted and so I avoid it. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. Someone in Second Life suggested that my new Spatial Series is reminicent of Diebenkorn. I'm very much influenced by painters but frankly was not familiar with this body of work. I see the resemblance and would hope some day to have as much finesse with the brush on canvas. As far as I am concerned, it will never be passe. But maybe I have found a way to enter the next century and still portray stunning images of an abstract impressionist style.

December Art Exhibits

Twilight's Peace Gallery is featuring my work for their grand reopening coming soon. Two new series are featured - Budding and Crepe. The sculpture for Budding won an honorable mention at the December UWA 3D Competition as a "Simple Beauty". It is displayed in the gallery as a mini sculpture with some selected pictures. Additional pictures will be shown at PiRats in January with the full-size sculpture.

The Crepe series uses the colors of red and green with a veil of black. Very Christmassy.

Also featured is the Fauve series, which was debuted at PiRats and also featured at the Hopper House in September. It combines organic and geometric shapes. I just realized why I named it Fauve (wild beast) and subsequently created the sculpture to fit the name -- I assure you it was all subconsciously arranged. The geometric or box tends to "cage" the wild torus. The texture I made with pastels....writing crudely the word "Beast".

I am pleased with the way my work looks in the gallery and hope the response is positive.

I have no doubts whatsoever about the motives of many Second Life artists — making stuff to please competition judges or to increase sales or appeal to the masses. It is work that conforms to a set of well-known predetermined rules that are continuously reiterated by the public. Photographers have the greatest challenge over the cliche image, since most anyone with a camera can take a good picture of a sunset. Self-introspection aside, when it comes to making art, its the struggle that produces the best results, if only for yourself. STAY FRESH!

Latest Series - Budding

I've taken loads of shots of this sculpture. Very difficult to get the light and drama that I normally achieve due to the amount of transparency. I want the sculpture to be alive and want the pictures to capture it. I'm thinking that texture changing images will convey the essence of life in a microscopic world. This means my pictures won't be static like paintings but contain scripts like a short framed video.

Update: No time to work on animation but I think I've found a source for the script. For now, the still life pictures resonate. Latest news: I've submitted the full size sculpture of Budding to the UWA Design Competition. Its in the non-scripted category. Its an unusual piece (as most of my stuff is) and from what I can tell, previous winning works are representational, surreal, or deal with fantasy. It might stand out because it is unusual or be dismissed because of it.

Alot of what I see in Second life is cliche art . When the message becomes blatantly obvious, it turns into caricature and social comment. This isn't all bad. They win competitions and make sales. Cliches become cliches because they work. Its what the artist does with them that matters.

This weekend Physeter Nichols (conducting a tour of SL installations) stated more than once that my artwork was indicative of very different thinking - a non linear or lateral approach. I felt sort of compelled to sort this statement out because it almost seemed like a concern...as if there was something a little "tetched" about my brain.

"Every act of creation is first an act of destruction,”my favorite artist of all time said (Pictured above) He didn't spend time analyzing his next move, he moved on impulse to break down the normal restrictions and impediments to new discovery. Picasso was a lateral thinker. I'm going to imagine that I'm brainstorming with Picasso on my next piece of art.

So what is entelechy? It is the vital force that pushes you to make the most of your potential and work towards a specific goal. Chaos is a good thing for lateral or non-linear thinkers.

"2001" one by Liz Larner may be on permanent display at UCSF Mission Bay in the Genetics, Development and Behavioral Sciences building but in 2007 it was in NYC Central Park. She takes the sphere and the cube and puts it together in a twelve feet high and twelve foot deep stainless steel, and fiberglass piece painted in green and purple iridescent urethane. Its contour and color change with the viewer's angle and the overall light conditions so that it seems to be both at rest and undergoing metamorphosis. George Hart - Geometric Sculptures

This piece is called "Tumbleweed" and I might try to do something like it in SL but with alphas. On the otherhand..I might even try the metal look. I need to put a little tumbleweed on the desert plot in Burning Life. Most all geometric sculpture is symmetrical and precise--something that I find nice to look at but overwhelmingly restrictive to my way of working. George W. Hart makes some beautiful sculptures. There are actually many out there just like him but I stumbled across his work when I googled tumbleweed. Vladimir Bulatov and Bathsheba Grossman have similar backgrounds and approaches.

In Second Life Bathsheba Grossman is know as Wizard Gynoid. Then there is always Seifert Surface (mathemetician Henry Segerman in RL)...and probably others that use mathematics and scientific principles on purpose to create art in Second Life.

Forever Series Scripted Sculpture

A new series of scripted sculptures called "Forever" where I use a twisted prim and alpha textures intertwined, rotating and evolving in no certain pattern but always returning to the original shape. So here is what the camp looked like after one day.

The flatbed and the old pick-up are full of materials and a few days of supplies.

There isn't a convenience store nearby and as you can see its in the middle of the desert. Not even a tree for shade. This dry parched campsite will be transformed into an oasis. The lightweight balsa wood blocks will rise from the fossil pond into an explosion of color and sound. Clouds of mist and the churning of time and devolving matter will represent "The Cambrian Explosion".

Day 1 - Burning Life Camp

First Day in the desert, towards evening. Found the dry parched campsite and a mound of sand. Pulled the flatbed truck close by and took out the pick and the shovel and began digging. Uncovered some interesting rocks with fossils embedded. After several hours of digging, a pool of water bubbled up to the surface. It was here that I was inspired to create a piece called "The Cambrian Explosion"as part of the theme of this year's Burning Life. The Cambrian explosion was the seemingly rapid appearance of most major groups of complex animals around 530 million years ago, as evidenced by the fossil records. The exhibition begins October 17. I have plenty of time to learn what it is that I want to do with this experiment.

John Chamberlaiin

John Chamberlain accomplishes with crushed auto parts what the Abstract Expressionists accomplished with paint. He creats vast, swirling compositions of colored metal scraps from automobiles that earned him international fame. In his prints, Chamberlain transposes dynamic color abstractions from his sculptures to two-dimensional surfaces. Since the 1950s, Chamberlain has worked with steel ribbons to create his sculptures.

Ernest Trova

Like all artists, to do series work is extremely satisfying. Ernest Trova, an artist who died this year began as a painter and then a sculptor.

He created multiple versions of "Falling Man" and reduced the form further and further, both in painting and sculpture. He even started his own sculpture park.

August 22 - October 4, 2009. Come see my exhibit of 8 colorful Primagery series, including my most recent - Poseidon and Fauve. This is a beautiful gallery on an equally beautiful sim called Symphony. The curator, Morgana Nagorski, a top-notch SL photographer, was kind enough to ask me to exhibit in this new gallery - the Hopper House. A variety of photographs are shown in each series which illustrates the vast and plentiful images contained in one sculpture. A few images have never been shown before and some prices have been reduced on others. The works were carefully selected from my portfolio and represent some of my best work. On the grounds are also two chandeliers - scripted sculptures that mesmorize and tantilize. They look nice in a natural setting. I know there is more of his artwork out there..but was happy to see this exhibit and have a chance to purchase one or two things. Sorry I never had a chance to meet him when he was alive, but his work lives on.

Inpsired to use more alphas and make the shapes transform as the script rotates.

New Series - Fauve

Governor's Palace exhibit July 28 - August 23 2009, featuring the art of Maryva Mayo - Sledge Roffo - Layachi Ihnen - Ragamuffin Kips.

This series sculpture uses a texture I made with pastels and then uploaded. The combined use of geometric and organic shapes provided some new looking images and colors that are subtle, rather than bold.

Also included in the exhibit is the series, "Lexicon".

Cat Shilova was there to help with some French translating.

God Concepts and Religion

I expect this will be primarily a representational art show with many figurative works dotted by recognizable symbols with lots of angst. If you want to see some historical religious art in real life be sure to see Michelangelo's Dante's Inferno and Rodin's Gates of Hell and the Gates of Paradise in Florence. This will be a challenge for me since I am a Deist and an abstract artist. I won't miss the show even if I don't enter anything. New Primagery Series - Poseidon

This series takes me back to my roots using the twisted torus and the sphere but with new emphasis on line. The sculpture does not rotate so that the viewer can peer into it like I do to take the snapshots. A full sized sculpture is also available with a particle script which inspired the title. I hope to show it sometime soon but liked this cozy little setup here at PiRats for the smaller one. Sales have been super slow lately as the economy is down but we persevere. My work is still evolving but in more subtle ways. My next experiment will be to explore ways to evoke the look and feel of stained or leaded glass in a new chandelier series. This show opened on Tuesday and runs through July 18.

Masiko helped me last December when I had nowhere to go and no place to show my art. I met Special Jewell, Penelope Parx, and several other people that I call my friends at her gallery. I put some work up around the pool area and there were lots of events to go to and the place was active. I miss Masiko and her dedication to the founding principles of Ujima Coop. Ujima is Colllective Work and Responsibility. Giorgio Morandi - Natura morta

Still Life .....the quintessential painters realm that can be so predictable..isn't. They are remarkable in that they are of unremarkable things. Each composition seems tranquil and subtle. I hope to see his work sometime and become mesmorized or better yet...create my own such mesmorizing pieces. The brown hues and soft shapes are stunningly minimalist.

Karuna - Healing Quest Starts Thursday, June 4, 2009

Beginning this weekend, the beautiful host island site of Karuna will be featuring my art. (None of the work is for sale) Jenaia Morane asked me awhile ago to participate in this worthy cause and now it has finally come to fruition. Karuna is a non-profit sim that promotes AIDS/HIV awareness where stories are shared in music, literature, and art.

My work lines a path along the riverbank to the Community Center where some of my sculptures are displayed. On the roof of the Community Center a temporary art gallery has been set up and three of my Limited Edition Primagery sets are shown. Inside the Center, more 2D images are exhibited. The work shown comprises a selection from a body of work that I have produced from November to January, with the exception of the sculptures displayed in the garden which are very recent.

Cascadia Artwalk Opened

I'm glad I finally have an LM to this spot...I had to dive from a nightclub in the sky and then swim over...and all the while carrying a sculpture and that was over a month ago. I want to change it out to my newest Stronger Dance and make some room on my Profile Picks to promote the site. My picks are full..the latest being an installation called "Cancerland" which I just went through recently. I can't really say I enjoyed it...but it was moving. So......am thinking that my blog will have to become an extension of my picks. Patrons of the Arts in Second Life

I just read Larry Johnson's contribution to NPIRL Bettina Tizzy's blog and was a little overwhelmed with guilt over what is perceived to be a blatant disregard by artists for the hosting sim that displays the artwork. http://npirl.blogspot.com/2009/06/on-artists-and-their-patrons.html

In addition to my Profile picks which is limited to ten, I have this blog which probably no one ever reads. Its like my personal journal. I've closed my Flickr account and my Twitter account to keep me focused on my RL work which is my mainstay of employment. I do not make a living on SL and spend roughly 3 hours a day there. When I'm not making art, I am with friends or someone special, supporting the artwork of others, or collaborating with others in their endeavors.

It is my dream to participate in Burning Life or have an installation of my own someday, if only briefly, documented by pictures. Its my dream to showcase my art to a variety of people in Second Life that appreciate the vast and untapped possibilities of this virtual world. I've found the educational community a vital part of my fan club. Art enhances our Second Lives....its a melting pot of ideas...intellectual, visual, and stimulating to the senses.

I'm also a patron of the arts, having spent a fortune filling up my inventory with artist works. I don't even have an SL home to display them. I feel taken for granted too...and would like to hear some thanks once and awhile when I purchase something and perhaps an inkind purchase of my art. Not everyone "gets" it. I tend to promote a mutual back scratching kind of relationship with other artists and content creators and need to extend this out to the hosting sim, as well, when they have offered to display my work for free. When I make a sale, I try to immediately contact the purchaser and extend my heartfelt thanks for their support. I nurture my customers and need to do the same for other patrons. I'm doing rather well so am spreading the wealth a couple dollars at a time so that other artists in the SL community continue to be engaged in the virtual art experience.

Soooo.......Thank you NMC for enriching the lives of the Second Life Community and crossing over to the realm of real life. Thank you for the exposure at the Aho Museum. I haven't had a chance to experience all that your campus provides but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate your patronage. If I had more Profile Picks, I'd certainly be promoting more sites.

A Matter of Scale

This artist has captured what is possible in Second Life. A reverse of large scale sculptures in RL artworld...this artist makes ordinary seem out of this world.

On the other spectrum we have a sculptor who plays with scale and the human figure in another interesting way.

While I don't work with the figure in my art or anything representational, scale plays an integral part in presentation. When small, there is an intimate relationship with the viewer--its accessible and something you can place in your home. On a large scale it is unreal and spectacular and more subject to what is happening in the environment.

Waves and the Sea

Unbelievable captures of a natural event that I found on a Cool Picture site. The shapes and colors and translucency attract me as well as the negative space. I try to capture depth in my pictures but it is often difficult, given the medium. Then again, I haven't tried to take pictures while my sculptures are sitting on water with something in the background. I should try that sometime but then it would be more like a photograph and less like a painting. I am jealous of photographers that can take pics in SL with Basic Shaders on. I crash or end up with seams. Its amazing that I get any quality shots at all.

Gruppo La'bun and Paolo Minoli

Behold an interactive collaboration of sculpture and installation. Paolo Minoli, a painter and sculptor combines his talents with that of Gruppo Labun, mixing sound with light and color play on shapes.

Interesting result in real life...far more interesting perhaps in Second Life with scripting possibilities.

Though its been done before in SL...but not this way.

Stronger Dance - Can't Please Everybody

At the advice of Japanese artist, Comet Moragi, I embarked on an ambitious attempt to make the largest sculptures I could without using those pesky mega prims. She also was the person who challenged me to add scripts to my sculptures. I make static sculptures for Primagery in Limited Editions. I make them miniature to display in the home. I make large scripted sculptures for outdoor installations as one-of-a kind. I am willing to display the large Primagery sculptures but at this juncture, have not offered them for sale. The large sculptures have particle scripts in them and do not resize with any controlled success. Bettina Tizzy thinks I should consider using a resizer script for my primagery sculptures so that potential purchasers have more options. This weekend I will change "Assuage" because I haven't sold one of them and can change the sculpture without consequence. The sculptures I make are expensive because they are limited in quantity and will no longer be available once the edition is exhausted. It takes months to put together a show like the one at anandra. Its no easy undertaking and its impossible to please everyone.

NEW WORK

The formal Opening Reception is Monday May 11, 5-7 pm showcasing all new Limited Editions, a total of 8 series. I have been working on these since the January show. In between I completed two series, Assuage and Mystic, that were debuted at the Aho Museum.

The anandra Contemporary Art Forum is a wonderful setting and kyra Gaea has a talent for displaying my work in its best light. Its an awesome show and I hope everyone takes the time to come see it.

Also included in this show is a chandelier that I made from a shape in the series "Stronger". Its under 20 prims of rotating textures and shapes with sparkle particles in rose and pink and gold colors. It was inspired by the round assemblage of found items in the chandelier by Stuart Haygarth which i included in the April 22 blog. I've made a few others in various colors and reduced prims and scripts but this is the first one to be shown in a gallery.
